With a professional working relationship spanning three decades, Gary F Martinez FAIA and Thomas E Johnson FAIA founded Martinez+Johnson Architecture in 1994 to bring their design sensitivities to institutional and cultural projects in urban locations. The 25-architect firm has since established an expertise in three main architectural areas – the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic structures, institutional buildings in urban areas and community settings, and the design and planning of performing arts venues.

Known for a thoughtful design approach to public facilities, M+J develops an intimate understanding of the needs of users, patrons, and operators destined to inhabit the projects of the firm. M+J looks to the future in their design aesthetic even when the context may be firmly rooted in the past and executes creative solutions to facilities both new and historic, where flexibility, ease of operation, and high but versatile performance characteristics are requisite. Venues express aspirational values and goals of the communities within which they are located, and at the same time conform to issues of economic value at the highest levels of environmental sustainability.

Thomas E Johnson, FAIA

Co-Founder + PRINCIPAL

Since 1981, Mr Johnson has been involved with a wide variety of architectural projects including large-scale urban office buildings, museum exhibition design, and historic preservation projects. His expertise has helped lead the design efforts on many award-winning projects, many of which include the design, restoration, or adaptive reuse of existing buildings. Mr Johnson believes strongly in the establishment of an understanding of the end-users’ needs, operational considerations, and appropriate building systems. Throughout the last 20 years, he and his partner, Gary Martinez, have expanded their knowledge of preservation and restoration efforts, helping to propel their firm to national recognition. Mr Johnson’s success largely stems from his ability to facilitate strong working relationships between the many organizations that influence urban projects.

Mr Johnson has served on professional organizations including the DC / AIA Design Committee, advised neighborhood associations, and taught and lectured at several colleges of architecture. He leads many of the firm’s performing arts efforts including those with not for profit associations and colleges and universities..

Mr Johnson has served both as a Design Principal and as Principal in Charge on numerous cultural projects with particular expertise in assisting associations in developing cultural initiatives. These award winning efforts include theatres, libraries, and museums. He has shepherded much of his recent work to pursue levels of sustainability certification through design.

RESTORED HISTORIC THEATRES MAY BE A UNIQUE BUILDING TYPE. THIS FIELD IS BEING CREATED AND REFINED BY A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE LIKE TOM. THEY STEP UP TO BEING LEADERS, MAKING AND REFINING STANDARDS AND MODELS. THAT GIVES THEIR WORK A LASTING IMPACT AND INSPIRES OTHER ARCHITECTS AND OWNERS TO CHALLENGE THE DEFINITIONS OF A SUCCESSFUL THEATRE RESTORATION. TOM IS AMONG THE BEST OF THOSE LEADERS.
