History

Our founding principals, Gary Martinez, AIA, and Tom Johnson, AIA, began working together in 1983, and opened their Washington DC office in 1994. The firm's early work included award-winning restoration of landmark theaters in Boston, Meridian, Mississippi and El Paso, Texas. Their successes led to commissions to create new performing arts and multi-use venues in Toronto, Las Vegas and Annapolis, and to bring new life to many of Metro Washington DC's most venerable government, commercial and residential structures--by way of dramatic additions, restoration, or both.

In 2010, the firm opened its New York City office, managed by Principal Stewart Jones, AIA. The firm will build on its past successes in cultural projects, particularly those involving the performing arts.  Over the last 20 years, M+J has developed projects for a number of clients including not for profit associations, educational institutions, and the nation's largest promoters and presenters of live entertainment.

Mr Martinez, Mr Johnson, and Mr Jones play an active leadership role in all of the firm's projects, contributing to and supervising the firm's staff of 26 professionals.
