M+J is in the forefront of two movements: Sustainability and historic preservation.
We’re longtime members of the US Green Building Council. We began investing early in training our staff as LEED accredited professionals. As leaders in the field, we’ve demonstrated our commitment by sponsoring, moderating and speaking at Green Buildings—Historic Preservation Symposia, an ongoing series of symposia started in NY and Washington in 2008. These gatherings bring leaders of government and industry together to share understanding of and commitment to best sustainability practices.
We work with clients to maximize sustainability in every project, but we don’t assume new buildings are greener than old ones. Recent studies conclude that well-made old commercial buildings—even without upgrade—are only slightly less energy-efficient than new ones. Given all costs of new construction, the greenest building is often the existing building.
